Douglas R. Bacon, M.D. ('77) is an anesthesiologist at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is also an associate professor of anesthesiology at the Mayo Medical School. Bacon received his M.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He completed his study in anesthesiology at SUNY/Buffalo where he also earned a master's degree in history.
Prior to accepting the position at the Mayo Clinic, he was the chief of Anesthesiology Services at Buffalo's Veteran's Hospital and Vice Chair for Education, Department of Anesthesiology at SUNY/Buffalo. Throughout his career, Bacon has been involved in a myriad of professional organizations including presidency and chairmanships. He is currently a member of sixteen professional organizations and societies. Bacon has helped further the profession of anesthesiology through his teaching, presentations and extensive writing with well over 100 published works.
Bacon, a past president of the Medical Historical Society of Western New York, is an authority on the history of anesthesiology. He currently serves as an officer of the National Anesthesia History Association and recently was a member of the International Organizing Committee for the Fifth International Symposium of the History of Anesthesiology (1999-2001).
