Dan Foote joined the U.S. Department of State as a Foreign Service Officer in March 1998. He currently oversees all operations as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Haiti. Most recently, Dan directed the Narcotics Affairs Section, one of the largest embassy sections worldwide, at Embassy Bogotá, Columbia. His overseas assignments have included a year as Team Leader for the interagency Provincial Reconstruction Team in Maysan province, Iraq. He also served a tour as a member of the Regional Reconstruction Team in Erbil, Iraq, and was Management Counselor at Embassy Buenos Aires.
Dan held both the Management Officer and Political/Economic Section Chief positions at Embassy Luxembourg, and was posted to Embassy London as General Services Officer. He served as a Vice Consul and General Services Officer at Consulate General Guadalajara, Mexico; was a Watch Officer in the State Department’s 24-hour Operations Center in Washington, DC; and served in the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs as both a Post Management Officer and Assignments Officer.
Dan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Columbia University, where he also lettered in football and track and field. Prior to joining the Department of State, Dan worked as a natural gas trader/broker in the New York City area for six years. He then spent two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Bolivia, where he managed an extensive development project overseeing the construction of water systems, improvement of schools/residences, and alternative agriculture and marketing programs. After returning to the U.S., Dan spent several years as a high school Spanish teacher and football/track & field coach in California.
He continues to enjoy sports, and considers weightlifting and cardiovascular training as hobbies. Dan and his wife, Claudia, have two children, Cecilia and Danny.
