Joseph E. Marine, M.D., Williamsville South High School, Class of 1982
Dr. Joseph Marine is a nationally recognized cardiologist who is affiliated with one of the top-ranked medical institutions in the United States. Dr. Marine has served on the faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Medicine and Division of Cardiology since 2004. He is currently Associate Professor of Medicine and Vice Director of the Division of Cardiology overseeing operations and strategic planning for the Division. Dr. Marine is also Chief of Cardiology for the Johns Hopkins Community Physicians. He previously served as Associate Director of Electrophysiology for Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Director of Electrophysiology for the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. His research interests include better understanding of mechanisms and treatment of atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation, two common and important arrhythmias. He has published extensively in scientific, educational and professional journals, and is a sought-after cardiovascular presenter for national medical conferences. Dr. Marine has a busy clinical practice caring for patients with a variety of heart rhythm disorders and performing pacemaker and catheter ablation procedures.
Raised in Williamsville, Dr. Marine attended Williamsville South, where he graduated in 1982 as valedictorian. He was a co-captain of the Boys’ Swim Team and played trumpet in several school and regional music organizations. After South, he attended Yale University, graduating in 1986 summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and San Francisco, receiving a joint masters-medical doctor degree in 1994. His residency training in internal medicine took place at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, followed by cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology training at Boston Medical Center and Boston’s Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. In 2010, he received a Master of Business Administration from the Carey School of Business at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Marine lives in Baltimore County, Maryland with his wife, Dr. Kathleen McHugh, who specializes in internal medicine, and their three children Julia, Thomas, and Teddy, as well as their dog, Willow.
