Ronald E. LaPorte, Ph.D.

Ronald E. LaPorte, Ph.D. ('67) is a professor at the University of Pittsburgh in both the departments of Pediatrics and Epidemiology. He also serves as director of Disease Monitoring and Telecommunication for the World Health Organization's (WHO) Collaborating Center for Diabetes Registries.

After graduating from South, LaPorte attended SUNY/Buffalo where he received a bachelor's degree in Psychology. He went on to the University of Pittsburgh where he earned his masters degree and doctorate in Psychology, and an M.S. in Epidemiology. He joined the faculty of the University in 1979 and was appointed a professor in 1990. During his tenure, he has received the University's Distinguished Teaching Award from the Graduate School of Public Health. LaPorte is an advisor for the WHO and has served as a trainer, principal investigator and project leader for the organization.

He has been a faculty member for the WHO International Diabetes Epidemiology Training Course in Cambridge, England, and has served as an advisor for the World Bank China Project and the Pan American Health Organization. A member of the American Epidemiology Society, he has served as Scientific Program Chairman of the Diabetes Epidemiology Council for the American Diabetes Association (1983-85) and has received the Kelly West Memorial Award as the Leading Diabetes Epidemiologist by the ADA. His credits include 379 publications.
