Thomas R. Mockaitis

Thomas R. Mockaitis (1973) is Professor of History at DePaul University, where he chaired the department from 1997-2000. After graduating from North he earned a BA in European History from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA, and his MA and Ph.D. in Modern British and Irish History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Professor Mockaitis has written numerous books and articles on terrorism, insurgency, and peace operations, including, Peacekeeping and Intrastate Conflict: the Sword or the Olive Branch? He recently co-edited Grand Strategy and the War on Terrorism with Paul Rich of Cambridge University. He has another book, The New Terrorism, Myths and Reality, in process. Mockaitis has received two major grants from the United States Institute of Peace (1995, 2001-2) for his work on peace operations in Bosnia and Kosovo. He team-teaches counter-terrorism courses internationally through the Center for Civil-Military Relations at the Naval Post-Graduate School. He has lectured at the U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College and the Canadian Forces Staff College and presented conference papers at the Pearson Peacekeeping Center (Canada), the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (UK) and the Military Science Department of the Austrian Ministry of Defense. He was the 2004 Eisenhower Professor at the Royal Military Academy of the Netherlands.

Professor Mockaitis is frequent commentator on local and national media addressing issues of terrorism and international security. He is an elder at Winnetka Presbyterian church and a volunteer soccer referee. He and his wife Martha Ross-Mockaitis reside in Winnetka, IL with their three children.
