Dan H. Sanes, Ph.D

Dan H. Sanes, Ph.D., 1974 – Dr. Dan Sanes is Professor in the Center for Neural Science and Department of Biology at New York University. He is a leading researcher in the study of hearing loss during development. His studies have shown how early hearing loss affects brain development and how the developmental deficits, caused by deafness, might be reversed. A second focus in his lab is the relationship between auditory cortex function and the distinctive perceptual abilities of juveniles and adults. His research has been supported by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders and the National Science Foundation, among others.

Dr. Sanes is a sought-after lecturer and presenter on auditory neuroscience and auditory processing. In addition to his research, Dr. Sanes teaches both undergraduate and graduate programs at NYU. He has published extensively and is co-author of the textbook, “Development of the Nervous System”, now in its second edition. At South, Dan was a member of the wrestling team, the school newspaper staff, the Searchlight yearbook staff, and the Academic Team. He was also a National Merit Semifinalist.

After high school, he attended the University of Massachusetts for his undergraduate studies and went on to Princeton University where he earned his master’s and doctorate degrees in Biology. He joined the faculty at New York University in 1987.
