Stephanie Browning McVicar, Au.D., CCC-A Williamsville East High School, Class of 1984 - Indutee 2015
Dr. Stephanie Browning McVicar is the Director of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Program and the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Public Health Initiative in Utah. As Program Manager within the Utah Department of Health's Children with Special Health Care Needs Bureau in Salt Lake City, she also directs Utah’s Children’s Hearing Aid Program. An Audiologist specializing in Pediatrics, Dr. McVicar has over two decades of experience in clinical audiology and the management of health care programs in both the public and private sectors.
Previously a Clinical Instructor for Audiology doctoral students, Dr. McVicar is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine and a member of the CMV Research Team at the University of Utah. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University. Dr. McVicar serves as the Audiology Core Faculty and Director of the Infant and Pediatric Audiology Program for the Utah Regional Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (URLEND) Program, encompassing Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. She was the first in the country to investigate the feasibility of remote auditory brainstem response testing in infants living in rural and frontier communities, areas classically underserved by medical and specialty services. Her pioneering work in Tele-Audiology and Congenital Cytomegalovirus (CMV) testing in infants failing their newborn hearing screening has been highlighted in numerous professional publications and medical journals.
Dr. McVicar is the State of Utah Representative to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and was recently honored with an appointment to serve on the ASHA National Board of Ethics beginning in 2016. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Audiology and was a recipient of their prestigious Scholar Award in 2012.
Dr. McVicar obtained an undergraduate degree in dual majors, Speech and Hearing Science and Early Childhood Studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She received her master’s degree in Audiology with a minor in Speech-Language Pathology from Syracuse University, and received her Doctor of Audiology degree (Au.D.) from A.T. Still University’s Arizona School of Health Sciences. As a student at Williamsville East, Dr. McVicar served as Freshman Class Treasurer, Student Council Secretary and, in her senior year, was Student Council President. She also gave the Commencement Address at graduation.
Despite a demanding schedule and travel obligations, Dr. McVicar coaches youth basketball, is a lacrosse Team Mom, serves as a Child and Volunteer Protection Advocate for the American Youth Soccer Organization, and assists with both Social Leadership and Elementary Reading Development at her sons’ charter school. She and her husband, Kevin, have two sons, Seamus and Finnegan, and reside in beautiful Cottonwood Heights, Utah.
